For our first adventure, Mwako and I went to Fern Forest Nature Center! We had so much fun walking the trails and engaging in conversation about so many different things. I brought my little troll doll, Celeste, to take some photos.
📌 Warning for a photo of a very tiny 🕸️ SPIDER 🕸️ a few photos ahead (it’s tiny) and a couple photos of a SNAKE in a tank at the end. 🐍
A good amount of the trails we picked had boardwalks. It was very hot in spite of the sun not being high in the air yet. While no significant wildlife was about, we spotted tons of interesting things, logs, mushrooms, just small pretty things in nature.
Coming off the boardwalk trail, we went to the Wetlands Wander South trail next.
Down this ledge, it looked as though a troll just like Celeste, or a goblin or elf, might live! Mwako said it probably housed snakes, though. 😐
Here’s the tiny spider I mentioned at the start of the post. Just minding its own business under a leaf! 🍃🕷️
Some of these photos look very “samey”… I should have made more of an effort in posing Celeste.
These two were a couple of my favorites, though:
And now for the highlight! Mwako spotted this tiny tortoise on the trail. We thought it might be dead at first glance, but no!
It really was the perfect size for Celeste!
After the photos we gentle put it in the grass where it couldn’t get stepped on.
Before leaving the nature center we went inside one of the buildings to cool off. There was a snake there! Celeste said hi to it.
For lunch, we went to The Tavern! It was a huge treat. I had a crab cake and a crème brûlée .
The crème brûlée was made perfectly. Mwako and I shared it!
Tomorrow we are going to the beach at Mwako’s suggestion. Very, very excited about that! 🤩 We will bring toys to play in the sand. It’s going to be so much fun, I’ve wanted to go to the beach in a Little sort of way for pretty much ever!
In our yard we have lots of little neighbors. Geckos, huge iguanas, squirrels, bluejays, curly-tails, some snails (tiny ones) the occasional opossum or raccoon, a few cats, some mice, hundreds of spiny-backed orb weaver spiders, and TONS of little frogs!
Today while watering the grass I came across one such froggy –a rather big one– who was acting sort of lethargic. These frogs generally jump away as soon as I walk near. But he stayed, even as I poked him a little, which was concerning.
He was on the side of my house (no grass near him) and with the sun rising, which can easily bake such a small critter to death here in FL, I could not leave him there. So I grabbed him and misted him with spring water, and then released him in a cool area of my garden, where he lives. But not before taking a lot of photos and video!!
I suppose his dignity may have taken a hit…
As soon as he was misted he perked up.
I had never been able to see such a perfect little frog so close up. It was wonderful!
Just look at his lovely perfect skin. He looks like a tiny dinosaur creature!
Last video… I really couldn’t pick one, I was just so pleased with what I’d captured…
After I was done harassing him with my camera I misted him once more and released him in a shady spot with taller grass (where I most often see these froggies). Hopefully he had a good rest of his day! 😊
